A day in the life.
Using Essential Oils in our day-to-day.
I've been incorporating essential oils in my life and in our home since mid 2020. One by one I have shifted how we clean, the products we use, how we support our emotions, what our 'first aid kit' looks like plus so much more. We have completely changed our lifestyle - and our family’s health and wellness are all the more better for it.
Obviously the oils I use change day to day. If someone isn’t feeling well, we are going to be using all the immune-boosting oils. If someone falls and scrapes their knee, we are going to be using an ouchie spray and/or Correct X. When someone is cranky or mama is stressed, we will be using all the grounding and uplifting oils.
So today, I am bringing you through a typical day in my home, with 4 little kids, to show you exactly which oils we used and why. We use so many oils on a daily basis, but I will switch it up if we are dealing with a particular ailment.
Here's an example of how we use our oils each day:
Every day is a little different in terms of what goes in the morning diffusers. I often stick to a blend of citrus oils. I love 2 drops each of wild orange, lemon, and lime. This blend is very uplifting and energizing to help us all get-up and get going. Citrus oils also purify and cleanse the air - double win!
When we are getting dressed for the day I will apply oils on the kids. During the winter months, I normally apply the immune-boosting roller, the Stronger kids blend. During the time of year when sicknesses aren’t as common, I usually start everyone off with the Steady blend. This is a blend of essential oils that can be helpful at promoting positivity and uplift the mood. Everyone, even our littles, can use mood support everyday!
My own morning skincare routine involves a few different oils. I use a DIY Rosewater Toner first, then a drop of Frankincense in a carrier oil (I LOVE Xali's Glow Oil for this). I then top it off with dōTERRA's Verage moisturiser for super hydrated skin.
I apply Balance to my wrists and the back of my neck every morning to help me stay sane - it is my favourite essential oil for stress and grounding my emotions. Then I pick my perfume. My ultimate duo is Magnolia and Whisper touch for a sweet, fun scent.
When it's time to do the boys hair and brush teeth, we reach for our DIY Hair Spray that has beautiful oils like tea tree, rosemary and geranium to keep school critters away and our hair healthy.
When we drop my oldest to school, we reach for the kids blends again. My big boy has big emotions and loves the Brave roller blend before he heads off to class.
With a family of 6, I do laundry most days. I love to add a few drops of essential oils to each load for a delicious scent. I often reach for things like Lemon Eucalyptus or Purify for freshness.
Before getting my baby and toddler down for their daytime naps, I apply a kids sleep blend like Calmer to their feet and down their spines. This blend helps calm them down and promotes healthy rest.
I apply Motivate (a blend of lemon, peppermint, wild orange, and rosemary) or InTune on myself before sitting down at the computer to get some work done. These oils help me to stay alert, awake and focused.
I like to add a couple of drops of citrus oils to my water to add flavour and gently detox my body. One drop of lemon and grapefruit is my favourite. I also like lime, tangerine, and green mandarin.
The afternoon diffuser will have something like Adaptiv, Balance or Coast to set the home in a wind-down but uplifting vibe.
If Spaghetti Bolognese is on the menu I will add Oregano essential oil to my Bolognese sauce in place of dried oregano. This oil is strong - so a toothpick swirl does the trick!
Before bed, all the kids get the Stronger kids blend on the bottom of their feet, and Calmer or Steady down their spines. If anyone has a particular aliment going on, then they will get an oil for that (e.g. sore tummy = Tamer; growing pains = Rescuer).
After dinner when I'm spending a couple more hours in front of the computer, I love to sip on a mug of hot water with a drop of peppermint to aid digestion and keep me alert and focused.
My night-time skin routine includes a double oil cleanse using Jojoba, Tea Tree and Lavender, followed by Salubelle under eyes and over fine lines. Then I apply Yarrow Pom as my skin serum. Yarrow has amazing properties for the skin and can promote a healthy skin tone, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
I use different oils each night before bed. I like to switch it up to see which ones work better for me and depending on the night. Most nights, I go to bed late, and my brain is still going a million miles a minute. Applying Vetiver to the soles of my feet - and particularly my big toe helps me to fall asleep.
All the diffusers get a calming blend of essential oils at night. Lavender, frankincense, vetiver, sandalwood, and cedarwood are a few of our favourites for in the bedroom.
While we sleep we cleanse and purify the air with 2 drops each of On Guard, Litsea and Purify essential oils. The kitchen and living space smell amazing we wake up.
This is just scratching the surface on what we would use in our home everyday. This is not to mention the DIY’s we’ve made and use daily... think hand wipes, soft scrub, Surface Cleaner, baby bum wipes, Stain Remover Spray, baby bum cream, laundry powder, glass cleaner, the list goes on.
These essential oils are not just for the smell of it. Use them in every area and space of your home + lives!
